Business NBN vs the plan you’re probably on
Most small businesses run on a residential plan and never question it. Here’s the one number that explains the frozen video calls — plus current pricing for every tier.
Residential and business NBN plans look similar on a comparison site. They behave nothing alike once eight people are on a video call and the cloud backup kicks in.
It’s the upload speed
Residential plans are built for downloading. Business runs on upload.
A residential 100/20 plan gives you 20 Mbps of upload, shared across every video call, every cloud backup and every file your team sends. Business Fast gives you 40 Mbps up on the same download speed. That single number is why calls freeze at 11am and not at 7pm.
Downloads are bursty and forgiving — a page loads a moment later and nobody notices. Uploads are constant and shared, so when they run short, everyone feels it at once.
What else changes
| Home plan | Business plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Upload speed | 20 Mbps | 40–500 Mbps |
| Static IP address | Not included | Included |
| Service level | Best effort | Bronze / Gold |
| Fault priority | Household queue | Business queue |
| Hosted phone ready | Not guaranteed | Yes |
A static IP matters for remote access, site-to-site connections and hosted phone systems — anything that has to find your office reliably. Residential plans don’t include one.
Priority support means a fault is handled as a business outage rather than a household inconvenience. When the line is how you take payments, that difference is the whole point.

Free modem this August
Sign up to any NBN plan before 31 August 2026 and the modem is included — residential or business. New services only, on a 36-month contract.
Check the address, not the brochure
Available speeds depend on the technology at your building. FTTP, FTTN, HFC and fixed wireless all behave differently on the same plan, and two shops on the same street can have different options.
That’s what a site audit is for. We check what your address can actually get, recommend the tier that fits your team, and tell you plainly if a cheaper plan would do the job.
What can your address actually get?
Book a free site audit. We’ll confirm the technology and real speeds at your premises, recommend the right tier, and include the modem if you sign up before 31 August.
