Which NBN speed tier do you actually need?
Speed tiers are sold on the biggest number. Most businesses don’t need it — and the ones who do usually need upload, not download.
Downloads are bursty and forgiving. Uploads are constant and shared — every video call, every backup, every file your team sends. It’s almost always the number that’s actually short, and almost never the one on the advertisement.
The sizing guide
- 1–5 people — Business Fast 100/40, $109Email, cloud apps and a few concurrent video calls. 40 Mbps of upload comfortably carries five simultaneous meetings. Going higher buys headroom you won’t touch.
- 5–20 people — Business Superfast 250/100, from $119The point where upload starts to bite: overlapping calls, cloud backup running during the day, larger file transfers. The 100 Mbps up is the real upgrade here, not the 250 down.
- 20–50 people — Turbofast 500/200, $139Multiple teams, video-heavy work, hosted phones and continuous sync. Also the tier where a service level stops being a nice-to-have.
- Heavy or specialised — Ultrafast 1000/400 or Hyperfast 2000/500Large media files, many simultaneous users, or a site acting as a hub for others. Worth it when you can name the workload that needs it — not as insurance.

Where we’ll talk you down
If your upload sits under 20% utilisation at peak, a higher tier changes nothing you can feel. We’d rather move you down and keep you than sell you headroom you never touch.
Technology matters more than the plan
Available speeds depend on what’s at your building. FTTP can reach the top tiers; FTTN often can’t, regardless of what you pay for. HFC and fixed wireless behave differently again. Two shops on the same street can have completely different options.
That’s the first thing to check, and it’s the reason we start with a site audit rather than a quote.
