Ransomware, phishing & zero-days: a plain-English guide for business

What the threats actually are, how modern defence works in layers, and what to look for.

You don’t need to be a big company to be a target — you need to be reachable. Attackers automate, and small and medium businesses are attractive precisely because they often have fewer defences. Here’s how to think about it without the jargon.

The Australian threat landscape, in numbers

Australia’s national cyber agency (ASD) received a cybercrime report on average every 6 minutes in 2024–25 — more than 84,700 reports in the year. And the cost is climbing fast:

$56,600
avg cost per cybercrime — small business (↑14%)
$97,200
avg cost — medium business (↑55%)
every 6 min
a cybercrime report in Australia

Know your enemy: the common threats

Phishing & business email compromise (BEC)

A convincing email tricks a staff member into handing over a password or paying a fake invoice. BEC fraud was one of the top reported causes of business financial loss — often no malware involved, just a well-timed message.

Ransomware

Malicious software encrypts your files and demands payment. Modern strains also steal data first and threaten to leak it, so backups alone aren’t enough.

Zero-day & fileless attacks

Exploits of flaws before a patch exists, or attacks that run in memory without dropping a traditional virus file — invisible to signature-only antivirus.

Modern defence works in layers

No single product stops everything. Effective security stacks up several layers so that if one is bypassed, the next catches the threat.

Prevention
Ransomware mitigation
EDR / XDR
24/7 MDR

Prevention blocks known and unknown threats using machine learning and behaviour analysis before they run. EDR (Endpoint Detection & Response) watches for suspicious activity and lets you investigate and roll back. XDR extends that across identity, cloud apps, network and mobile. MDR (Managed Detection & Response) puts a 24/7 team of experts behind it all — because attackers don’t keep business hours.

How Comstel protects you: Bitdefender GravityZone

Comstel deploys and manages Bitdefender GravityZone — consistently rated a top endpoint platform — tailored to your size and risk. Prevention-first design is built to deliver:

  • 85% fewer incidents through layered prevention.
  • 70% less day-to-day security effort for your team.
  • 50% faster incident response with guided remediation.

Choose your level: Business Security Premium (prevention), Enterprise (adds EDR), Defense XDR, or fully-managed MDR PLUS with a 24/7 SOC and a breach warranty up to US$1,000,000.

Five things every business should do this month

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) everywhere it’s offered.
  • Move from signature-only antivirus to a modern prevention + EDR platform.
  • Keep offline, tested backups — and assume attackers will try to delete them.
  • Train staff to spot phishing and to verify payment-detail changes by phone.
  • Have a plan (and ideally a 24/7 team) for when, not if, something gets through.
