The NBN isn’t one single technology β it’s a collection of different connection methods deployed across Australia depending on existing infrastructure in each area. Your connection type determines the maximum speed plans available to you and what equipment is needed. Here’s what each one means:
|
FTTP β Fibre to the Premises
β FASTEST β BEST OPTION
Fibre optic cable runs all the way directly to your home or business. No copper involved at any point β delivers the fastest, most consistent speeds available.
|
HFC β Hybrid Fibre Coaxial
FAST β Former Pay TV Cable
Fibre runs to a node in your street, then existing coaxial cable (formerly used for pay TV) carries the signal the final distance to your property. Fast but shared with nearby premises.
|
FTTC β Fibre to the Curb
GOOD β Fibre Very Close
Fibre runs to a small pit right outside your property at the curb, then a very short copper stretch connects to your home. Because copper is so short, speeds are close to FTTP quality.
|
||||||||||||
|
FTTN β Fibre to the Node
MODERATE β Speed Depends on Distance
Fibre runs to a street cabinet (node) serving your neighbourhood, then existing copper phone lines carry the signal the rest of the way. Speed depends on how far you are from the node.
|
FTTB β Fibre to the Building
GOOD β Common in Apartments
Fibre runs directly to the communications room in your apartment building or commercial complex, then existing in-building copper or ethernet wiring connects each unit.
|
Fixed Wireless NBN
REGIONAL β No Cables Needed
Radio signals transmitted from an NBN tower to an outdoor antenna installed at your property. No underground cables required β the only option for many regional and rural areas.

Speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Download speed affects how fast content and data comes to you; upload speed affects how fast you send data out β critical for cloud backup, VoIP, and video calls. Here’s how each tier translates to real-world performance:
| Speed Tier | Down / Up | What It Supports | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | 25 / 5 Mbps | Basic browsing, email, light streaming. 1β2 users | Home & micro-business |
| NBN 50 | 50 / 20 Mbps | HD streaming, video calls, cloud apps. 2β4 users | Home office & small business |
| NBN 100 | 100 / 20 Mbps | Multiple HD calls, cloud work, large file transfers. 4β10 users | Most SMBs |
| NBN 250 | 250 / 25 Mbps | 4K video, heavy cloud use, large file sync. 10β20 users | Growing businesses |
| NBN 500β1000 | 500β1000 / 50 Mbps | High-volume cloud, multi-site backup, 20+ users simultaneously | Mediumβlarge businesses |
| Enterprise Fibre | Custom (symmetric) | Guaranteed SLA, dedicated bandwidth, data centres, multi-site WAN | Enterprise & mission-critical |
