Comstel Energy · Solar Batteries

Solar batteries — store the sun, use it after dark.

Lithium battery storage transforms a solar system from daytime-only generation into 24/7 self-consumption + backup power. Comstel installs Tier-1 lithium batteries — sized to your evening load profile, with full backup capability for critical loads.

Why Add a Battery

Six reasons businesses add storage to their solar.

Solar without battery sends excess generation to the grid at low feed-in tariffs. A battery captures that surplus for your own evening use — at full retail electricity prices.

Higher Self-Consumption

Use 80-90% of generated solar instead of 30-40%. The economics improve dramatically.

Backup Power

Critical loads run during grid outages — POS systems, freezers, IT, security. Auto-transfer in under 10 seconds.

Peak Tariff Shaving

Avoid the 3-9pm peak tariff window by discharging from battery — significant savings on commercial bills.

Demand Charge Reduction

Battery can shave peak demand and reduce demand charges, which are often the largest line item.

Virtual Power Plant

Earn revenue by joining a VPP — your battery exports to the grid during peak events.

Future-Proofing

Tariff arbitrage value keeps growing. Locks in self-consumption value for 10-15 years.

Key Considerations

Six things to know before adding storage.

Batteries are a big-ticket purchase. These are the topics that determine whether you'll be happy with it — talk to us about the specifics for your site.

Battery Chemistry

LFP vs NMC

Most modern commercial batteries use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) — safest chemistry, non-flammable, longest cycle life. We avoid older NMC chemistries for new installs.

  • LFP — safe + long-life
  • Non-flammable chemistry
  • 6000+ cycle ratings
  • 10-year warranty standard
Sizing Approach

Right-Sized, Not Oversized

Most businesses oversize batteries. We model your actual evening load and right-size — saves thousands without losing the benefit.

  • Based on actual usage
  • Avoid oversizing waste
  • Right-sized payback
  • Stackable for growth
Backup Configuration

Critical Loads Selection

Decide which circuits stay powered during an outage — POS, refrigeration, IT, lighting. Designed at install.

  • Selected-load backup
  • Whole-of-site backup option
  • Critical-load circuits
  • Auto-transfer switching
Modular Architecture

Stack as You Grow

Modern battery systems are modular — start with 5-10kWh and add more later as needs grow or budget allows.

  • Stackable modules
  • Start small, scale
  • Same-system expansion
  • No replacement needed
Smart Dispatch

When to Charge / Discharge

AI-driven controllers learn your usage and tariff structure — automatically optimising when to charge from solar, when to discharge to loads or grid.

  • AI-based learning
  • Tariff-aware dispatch
  • VPP-ready
  • Demand-charge logic
Standards & Safety

AS/NZS 5139 Compliance

Australian Standards AS/NZS 5139 governs battery installation — clearances, ventilation, fire suppression. Comstel installs to spec, every time.

  • AS/NZS 5139 compliant
  • Proper clearances
  • Ventilation specified
  • Certified installer

Common Questions

FAQs

How big should my battery be?
Most commercial batteries are sized between 5kWh and 30kWh+. Sizing depends on evening load profile, backup-power needs and budget. Larger sites can stack modular batteries up to 100kWh+.
How long does a solar battery last?
Modern lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries are warrantied for 10 years and 6000+ cycles at 70% retained capacity. Real-world life is typically 12-15 years before noticeable degradation.
Does the battery provide backup power during outages?
Most modern batteries include backup capability for selected critical loads. When the grid fails, the system disconnects, the battery powers your critical circuits, and solar continues charging the battery.
How much can I save with a battery?
Batteries shift solar from day to evening (when tariffs are highest), eliminate exposure to time-of-use peaks, and avoid demand charges. Savings depend on tariffs — typically $1,500-$5,000+ per year on top of solar.
Are solar batteries safe?
Modern LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) chemistry is non-flammable and considered the safest current lithium chemistry. Australian Standards AS/NZS 5139 governs installation safety.
